The bustling farming community of Mto Wa Mbu, located between Manyara and Ngorongoro, is home to around 18,000 people. Spend a day here with a knowledgeable local guide and you'll discover a side of Tanzania that many visitors miss. A melting pot of cultures, Mto Wa Mbu is considered one of the only places in Tanzania where representatives of 120 tribes live happily side by side. Although the name translates to "Mosquito River", due to the village's permanent water source, we fortunately didn't see many mosquitoes. During your visit you will get a good idea of the social side of the village - farms and milling machines, schools and markets. You will climb Mount Oldonyo Lengai at midnight. This will take 5-7 hours from top to bottom. Oldoinyo Lengai” means “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. The summit of this strato-volcano rises to 2,962 meters above sea level and offers a direct view of the caldera of Tanzania's only officially certified active volcano and the only carbonatite volcano in the world; It is possible to cross the bottom of the crater on foot. The ascent of Oldoinyo Lengai is demanding due to daytime heat, lack of water, steep and unsuitable slopes of ash and crumbly rock, and considerable elevation gain.
